Post Prelim

Term 3 officially came to a close on a rather jovial note. That was because of the Teacher's day celebrations on the 31st of August, one day after GP Prelims. Speaking of which, the essay component of the paper was rather astonishing to some extent because of the genre of questions set. In other words, quite unexpected. Worse still, the compre was a disaster. The focus area was centred around Teenagers and their culture, and nothing else but that. I thought they would set broader issues such as global warming, terrorists threat or even historical events. Did not expect them to focus on a very narrow area especially for AQ, which referred speciafically to the case of Singapore Teens and their culture. That aside.

Next up was the week long break where it gave me the time to finally step up a gear and engage in 'proper revision'. It was definitely a much needed break after loads of mock exams which I thought were redundant. These mock exams (meant to mock you!) were supposed to test us how prepared we were for the Prelims, but then again, it interrupted my flow and in a sense hindered my preparation. However, it did help somehow or another. At least it forced me to speed up my revision thus reducing last minute stress. So that was the good part about it.

Anyway, reflecting back on the Prelims thus far, I would say that everything has not gone all too well. A couple of hickcups along the way. The first 2 papers were rather disapointing especially Physical Geography. I was stunned at those questions he set. Never did I expect slopes (a nightmare to study) to be combined with Hydrology and what was rather irritating was the fact that questions on Hydrology were very specific. It focused more on the concepts rather than the application or case studies which shocked me. Thankfully though, Human Geography was quite alright, questions that I expected came out. Econs was challenging on the other hand. Seems like if you read widely, you will have an added advantage. This was very evident in the essay and case study sections.

'Discuss the economic impacts associated with the two Integrated Resorts.' (25m)

How would you answer that? That requires a lot of general knowledge and a bit of common sense. Whatever we learnt will only serve as the framework. Physics was difficult to some extent but challenging. Time management would be and will always be a key factor for me. The worst thing is that you know how to attempt the question but do not have sufficient time to complete it. Thus exams are not just about knowing how to do all the questions, but also managing your time accordingly.

Now that all the prelim exams are over, it is time to look forward. Next up would be the 'A' levels which would ultimately determine one's future. The stakes are much higher than the 'O' levels this time. So brace yourselves!

Now

Much has happened since I last updated this blog. Term 2 officially came to a close with a bang. Band concert (AE), followed by the Perth Trip, then the dreaded mid year exams and during which, the ongoing World Cup. The World Cup was certainly the highlight during that June and July period with Italy being crowned as champions of world football in Berlin on 9th July. Following that was the post mid year exam period where there was the usual practice of reviewing the mid year results. Apparently, the cohort as a whole did not do so well probably owing to the fact that the exams took place during the crucial stages of the Fifa World Cup 2006. Needless to say, it was an interesting experience having to cope with studying and watching the World Cup matches at the same time. Anyway, it comes round once in 4 years isn't it?

It seemed like my class was in trouble after news came in later in July that we were in 'Crisis'. But I back to defer. The June Holidays were just over then and many I'm sure, myself included, did not really have the mood to take exams straight after the long but stressful one month break. Factor in the World Cup and you will get a better understanding of the situation. External factors are bound to affect people but these are just short term. In the long run, the situation will improve and improve it certainly has. By mid August, everyone was working their socks off, assignments started to pour in like a river that never siezes to flow, teachers started seeing students everyday for consultation and to top things up, moral support was all around the school. A study culture was emerging, a trend that seemed to take the college by storm. Such was never withnessed before. The potential of the school was finally being exploited to almost the fullest. It was indeed an astounding sight to some extent.

The true test however, has yet to come. It is just round the corner. This would determine to some degree whether the last ditch effort put in has been worthwhile or not. I bet it will be because as the chinese saying goes 'yi fen gen yun, yi fen shou huo'. How appropriate. The teachers have been rewarded just a couple of days ago for their efforts to help the ones who need help the most. They have been treated well by students who have given cards, gifts, presents etc. It just goes to show how much the students appreciate the teachers. Yes, they have been an inspiration for us. They have done their part for us, so its time for us to do our part; do our best for prelims. Still, the best gift for any teacher is to see his/her student obtaining the necessary grades to move on to the next stage of life. That ultimately is the Holy Grail.

As the Prelim exams draw ever closer, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone the best for their Prelim exams. The Days are numbered, but always remember to hover that hope. Having a positive attitude is crucial and I'm sure it will take you far beyond your imgination. Be like the eagle that soars above the sky and the storm. Don't be like the frog in the well.

God bless.
